Good Sleep Hygiene is the favored behavioral and environmental practice that propels us towards a good night's sleep. Good sleep hygiene establishes patterns and habits that help increase the likelihood of getting a good night's sleep. A regular sleep schedule for waking and retiring at night, avoiding evening exercise, reducing stress, and avoiding stimulants before bed all contribute to good sleep hygiene.
Also, creating an oasis for sleep by removing light sources and having the temperature optimal for sleep are other factors for good sleep hygiene. The bedroom should be a place that is used for sleep and sex only and never a room for studying, working, or arguing! For good sleep hygiene we must associate our bedroom with calm and peacefulness.
For a good night's sleep, the Z's we log must be achieved at night, and not through napping. Naps can be used to recover from sleep deprivation, for example with new moms, but under normal circumstances naps can be detrimental to getting a good night's sleep.
